Having self love isn’t always easy. Those negative thoughts tend to run rampant in our minds. Nobody should have to feel like they aren’t worthy or aren’t good enough. It’s time to retrain your negative thoughts and start feeling better about yourself!
Try identifying your negative beliefs. Challenge those and ask yourself questions. Is it true? Is there evidence? When you really look at those negative thoughts as physical words with emotions tied to them, you start to see the irrelevance and untruth behind them.
Be positive about yourself. Easier said than done right? But the secret to increasing your self love is giving yourself grace and being content with yourself. This doesn’t mean we aren’t always continuing to work on ourselves. You can have goals you want to crush or things you want to work on as you continue to love yourself at the same time! Writing a list of things you’re good at and what you love most about yourself is a great daily reminder to look at!
If there are people in your life who are toxic and don’t build you up, avoid them. You don’t need negativity in your life. The relationships in your life should be encouraging and positive and the people you choose to let go will continue to watch you from afar. They’ll watch you grow and see how happy you are with who YOU are and maybe it will start to change them for the better too.
One thing I know for sure is that words hold so much power. Words whether spoken or thought can really impact our self love. The negative words we hear in our minds about ourselves over and over can be so daunting and the really sad part is that we start to believe them. We have to break this cycle in order to push forward in loving ourselves.
A few years ago I saw a video on Buzzfeed that showed a woman who had way too many negative thoughts in her mind. She was struggling with loving herself. She had been inspired by a project where a woman stood in public in a bikini blindfolded asking strangers to draw a heart on her body to promote self love. She stated that she stood with anyone who had ever struggled with an eating disorder. You can see that original video here.
But Amy Pence-Brown, whose video I saw, wondered what would happen if a woman of a different body type did the same thing. She wondered how it would be perceived by a mom in her 40s. So she stood outside blindfolded in a black bikini and asked people to draw hearts on her body to support self acceptance. And people did more than draw hearts. They wrote words of encouragement and love for Amy. Someone even wrote “Thank you.”
So this got me thinking. What if we put together an event where we did the same thing? So I’m asking women to come together on two separate dates at my studio in Aberdeen. This will be a group event where you will wear a two piece black outfit and be blindfolded as the other women in attendance write words of encouragement on your body. We all have those negative thoughts in our minds that we hear over and over. How beautiful will it be to see the words that others feel about us. Words are so powerful. Let’s start to listen more to the positive ones and lift each other up in the process. We will then do a quick portrait style photo shoot of each woman in attendance in front of a black background to really accentuate the words that have been written.
There will be a $100 fee to participate in the event and I have 4 spots remaining for Sunday, February 7th and 5 spots left for Saturday March 19th. Once you arrive for your chosen event date donations will be accepted. 100% of these donations will go to Beyond Survival. Beyond Survival is an organization in Grays Harbor that works to end sexual assault and violence.
I hope that you will consider being a part of this amazing event. There are two dates available to choose from and you will receive all of the edited digital images from your individual session plus the images from the group photos that we take.
If you’re interested in grabbing a spot for one of the dates please go here for more information.
