I love my body because…

Posted in: Uncategorized

I love my body because….you might take a look at that and hold a blank stare for at least five minutes. I get it and I’ve been there. School was cancelled today because of flooding and a high tide at 8am. This is a first for me. I mean, we’ve had snow days sure. But school has never been cancelled due to too much rain. But what do I expect I guess when we live on the ocean in Washington State? It’s rainy season times 100.

All of this rain and school being cancelled is bringing me back to the days of quarantine. I know a lot of you probably don’t want to be reminded of that and many of us are still currently there. But although repetitive and boring at times quarantine did a brilliant job at reminding me of a few things.

Like how amazing it feels to get outside.
Bras are NOT a necessity
And how hearing my teenage kids giggle like they’re five again totally makes my day

But it also forced us to go inside ourselves a little deeper. Which instantly brought me back to this boudoir session right before quarantine hit. It was in my old studio but it’s one I’ll never forget.

It truly reminded me how quickly we can forget who we are. We can lose our identities. Caring for our family, working for a company, being pulled in a million different directions. Those are people we love and want to do things for, we wouldn’t change any of it. But every once in a while we have to put ourselves first and remember who we are.

Being at home so much and away from other people also gives us an opportunity for negative self talk to rear its ugly head. We can start to believe the horrible lies we tell ourselves about how needing to lose weight to feel worthy, or how our bodies used to be back when we were 17, and all the other changes we’ve gone through. But I’m committed to making 2022 the year that I really do start to love my body how it is and I challenge you to join me. Here are the reasons why I love my body.

  1. I love my body because I’ve put it through SO much. It has done SO many things for me. From growing two babies, to running multiple full marathons, to playing softball, cheerleading, walking my dogs, kicking a ball, DANCING!!! My body has allowed me to have all of these amazing experiences and for this I choose to appreciate it.
  2. I love the feeling of laughing so hard I start to cry. I love joking with my daughter and each of us add on saying something even funnier than the last thing and end up in a fit of giggles with tears in our eyes.
  3. I love my body because it has no imperfections. Perfection isn’t a real thing and as my daughter used to say, “the only thing that’s perfect is the word perfect.” I have freckles and I love them. I have wrinkles and they tell my story. I have stretch marks and they remind me that I grew babies. It’s a miracle. Our entire body is a complete miracle.
  4. That number on the scale DOES NOT define how awesome my body is. The two aren’t even related.
  5. My body learned to trust me again. After deciding in high school that I was fat I went on an extreme diet and was exercising nonstop. Because of this my periods became irregular and it was really difficult when my husband and I were trying to get pregnant. I’m thankful that my body forgave me for this and allowed us to have two beautiful children.
  6. I love my body because my eyes are gorgeous. They’re one of my most favorite features and I truly believe that I can give one look and it tells a full story.
  7. I love my body because I can continue to try to get healthier and workout for my mental health rather than trying to lose weight to fit some strange media ideal.
  8. I’m really mentally strong. I can take a challenge head on and LOVE a good challenge. I’m super motivated when it comes to things I want and I won’t back until I get it.
  9. I love my body because after all of the roles I have played in my life and continue to play (wife, mother, business owner, friend, sister, daughter, coworker…..and I love every one), my body reminded me who I REALLY am.

That’s exactly what this session was about. She took a few hours with me to remember who she was. And then she went back out there stronger and even more powerful than before.

I love my body because she lets me know when I’m giving her what she needs (those endorphins after I exercise) but she also tells me when I need to rest (those aches and pains or muscle soreness when I’ve done too much). But I love my body most of all for the strength she gives me every day to walk and hike with my dogs, allowing me to let them live their best live, which in turn allows me to live my best life.
